Clinical Pilates

Clinical Pilates in Coquitlam at Core Kinesis Physiotherapy

Physiotherapist-led Pilates sessions that rebuild core strength, improve movement, and support recovery from injury.

What Is Clinical Pilates?

Clinical Pilates is a physiotherapy-based exercise program that uses Pilates principles to rebuild core strength, stability, and movement control. Sessions run on specialized reformer equipment, using adjustable spring resistance to support the body while still challenging the muscles that keep your spine and pelvis stable.

Unlike a general Pilates class, every session is led by a physiotherapist and shaped around your specific injury, condition, or goal. It’s commonly used for people recovering from back or neck pain, rebuilding strength after surgery, managing chronic postural issues, or simply looking to move better and prevent future injury. The low-impact nature of the exercises means you can build strength and mobility with minimal risk, whether you’re early in recovery or working toward a performance goal.

How We Approach Clinical Pilates at Core Kinesis

Clinical Pilates at Core Kinesis is delivered one-on-one by physiotherapists with additional training in Pilates-based rehabilitation. Sessions fit within our Performance Pyramid approach: once pain is under control, Pilates helps rebuild the strength and body awareness needed for lasting change, rather than a quick fix that doesn’t hold up.

Because every session is one-on-one, your program is adjusted in real time based on how your body responds, not run from a fixed class script.

What to Expect From Your First Session

Initial session: A 60-minute one-on-one assessment where your physiotherapist reviews your goals and injury history, then builds a program specific to you.

Follow-up sessions: 30 or 60-minute one-on-one sessions on the reformer, focused on breathing, form, and progressively building core strength and control.

Ongoing progress: Your program evolves as your strength and movement improve, so you’re never stuck repeating exercises that no longer challenge you.

Outcomes Patients Experience

  • Improved core strength and pelvic stability: many patients notice better control and less strain during everyday movements like bending, lifting, or standing for long periods, since the deep stabilizing muscles are doing more of the work.
  • Reduced risk of re-injury: by correcting movement patterns and posture rather than just building strength in isolation, you’re less likely to fall back into the habits that led to the injury in the first place.
  • Greater confidence returning to activity: whether that’s daily life, sport, or general fitness, patients often report feeling steadier and more in control of their body, not just stronger on paper.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Clinical Pilates the same as a regular Pilates class?

No. Clinical Pilates is led by a physiotherapist and tailored to your specific injury or condition, while a general Pilates class follows a fixed format for a group.

Do I need a referral to start?

No referral is needed. You can book directly, and your physiotherapist will complete an assessment at your first session.

Is Clinical Pilates covered by insurance?

Since sessions are delivered by a physiotherapist, they’re billed as physiotherapy and typically covered under extended health plans that include physiotherapy. For questions about your specific coverage, please contact our office directly.

Who is Clinical Pilates good for?

It’s well suited to people recovering from back or neck injuries, rebuilding strength after surgery, managing chronic postural pain, or wanting to build core strength safely alongside another treatment plan.

How is this different from working with a kinesiologist?

Clinical Pilates is physiotherapy-led and focused on rehabilitation of a specific injury or condition. Our kinesiology and active rehab sessions are a good next step once you’re ready to build broader strength and fitness.
