The commemorative day was created to honour the lost children and survivors of residential schools, their families and communities.

Why is the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation important?

Why is the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation important?
The acknowledgement of the tragic and painful history and ongoing impacts of residential schools is a vital component of the reconciliation process.
Today is an oppourtunity for all Canadians to take the time to acknowledge the adversity that Indigenous peoples have faced and continue to face to this day.
We are all learning of the different ways we can honour this important day. Considering ways to support local Indigenous organizations, like UNYA, is a great place to start.
