A lot of thought goes into picking the perfect backpack for back-to-school. For the kids and teens in our lives, the look of the bag is crucial. While this is an important consideration for them now, the ergonomics of their bag of choice should top the list of priorities while shopping. Finding a backpack that is fashionable and functional is much easier when you know what to look for.

We’ve broken down the key characteristics to look for in the ideal backpack so you can find the right fit for their style and their overall wellbeing. Here’s what to keep in mind:

Keep it cushioned.

Selecting straps and backs that cushion the load on your child’s neck, back and shoulders is the way to go. By choosing a more cushioned bag, you’re avoiding unnecessary irritation to blood vessels and nerves that can cause pain and tingling sensations in the neck, arms and hands when subject to excessive pressure.

Consider placement and size.

When trying backpacks on, check to see whether the bag’s straps are adjustable to ensure that the bag lines up with your child’s body. The top of the back should rest at your child’s shoulder blades with the bottom of the bag is more or less aligned with their hips.

Double-strapped backpacks are best.

Single-strapped bags cause an imbalance in gait, leading to a less-than-ideal domino effect on your child’s frame. Although a single-strapped bag may be the more fashionable choice for your child or teen, it’s important to search for a double-strapped bag that your child loves, finding a place where function and fashion meet. An added bonus to keep an eye out for is a backpack with chest and waist straps to ensure a good fit.

The more straps the better to secure a snug fit.
