Who needs orthotics?
People who are experiencing…
- Poor foot biomechanics such as over-pronation (inward rolling of the arch) and over-supination (outward moving of the arch), can cause changes to the knees and hips.
- Changes to the foot or ankle due to injury. Biomechanical changes following an injury sometimes occur, causing the foot to require additional support.
- Aging and physiological changes during pregnancy can change the foot’s structure. In these instances, orthotics can help to maintain physiological balance.
- Those recovering from common injuries such as plantar fasciitis, achilles tendinopathy, tibialis posterior tendinopathy, peroneal tendinopathy, Morten’s neuroma, bunions, stress fractures, lower back pain and shin splints (MTSS) can also benefit from orthotics.
It’s important to note that not everyone needs orthotics. That’s why a biomechanical assessment with a physiotherapist is vital in making the decision of whether or not orthotics are right for you. Your physiotherapist will address your needs and help to determine whether orthotics would benefit you.
What are custom orthotics?
Custom orthotics are prescribed inserts for your shoes. Unlike the generic orthotics available in-store, custom orthotics are designed to support and aid in the correction of biomechanical abnormalities of your body – after all, every foot and every body is unique!
How long do custom orthotics last?
The life of your orthotics depends on how often you wear them and how hard you wear them. They typically last approximately 3-5 years.
What happens during an assessment for custom orthotics?
Your physiotherapist will complete a biomechanical assessment, which includes assessments of your posture, range of motion, posture, balance, gait and overall functional movement.
Following the assessment, your physiotherapist will take a foam cast impression of your foot which will be used to create your very own custom orthotics.
Do children need orthotics? Is it possible to prescribe custom orthotics to children?
Yes! However, a biomechanical assessment is crucial to analyze a child’s imbalances and to understand and address the physical demands placed on their growing body.
Are custom orthotics covered by my insurance plan?
Many major insurance plans include coverage for custom orthotics. Reach out to your insurance provider to find out if orthotics are covered under your plan!
I just received my orthotics. How do I adapt to wearing them?
When you first get your orthotics, it’s encouraged to wean and gradually increase the time spent wearing them. Don’t start off by wearing them for 8 hours right out of the gate! Instead, start with 1-2 hours a day and gradually increase the time spent wearing them by 1-2 hours per day for the first 1-2 weeks.
